I believe in the off season in order to resign a player you should have to have space on your 26 man roster. That is how we handle it in the regular season. If you bid on a free agent you must open a spot within 24 hours. It should be the same in the off season. A 26 man roster is a 26 man roster. You should not be able to have 30-40 players in the off season to use as trade bait. If that is the case then why have restrictions at all. In order to sign a player during the season you must have room on your roster. It should be the same in the off sesson.
Once free agency starts you have to be down to the 26. Not sure why it is an issue during this time when moves are allowed but rosters are not finalized

I think most leagues increase roster size in the off season - just to give managers a little more flexibility. Then back to normal when the season starts. Ether way it be difficult to monitor since it's all done in here.
Yahoo should be open by the start of FA correct? so this should not be an issue. I was thinking it might be a problem to monitor before Yahoo opens
I am not talking about the players that have expiring contracts.Sure you are ok to try and trade them. I am talking about when you do resign one of them, there needs to be a spot open on your 26 man roster to place him.

But why? So much can happen before the actual deadline for 26-man. If I wanted to resign every single guy I own, I should be able to. It’s then on me to figure out how to cut down. Plus I’d likely be screwing myself cause I’d then have to buy out guys if I didn’t trade.

In real MLB each team has a 40 man roster going into Spring training, all contracted. They invite other players to attend. Teams sign free agents over the winter. There are far more contracted players than the final roster of 26 players on opening day. They release, send down, waiver, trade players once Spring training starts. Right now is our Spring trading. We have excess players “owned” and we just like real MLB have to get down to 26 players at deadline. I see no real difference between real MLB and our league.

I agree with Athletics.
I understand the logic behind Guardians, but like Athletics said, off season teams have their 40-man roster to play with. Also, like Dodgers said, we're screwing ourselves if we have too many signed come the 'drop' date.
All teams must remain at or under the 26 man MLB roster limit at all times. If you make a trade that puts you over roster limit, you must make a corresponding move at the same time(waivers/buyout/demotion, etc) to remain at the 26 roster limit.
this is straight from the rules. It states All teams must remain at or under the 26 man MLB roster limit at all times. It says at all times not just during the season.
I am not trying to cause any problems , I am just stating what I read in the rules.
The more I am thinking about this, if a contract is expired that means technically he is not yours unless you resign him. So in order to trade him you should have to resign him before trading him.
Respectfully man, I don’t think anyone in the league wants this except you. It makes rosters unnecessarily rigid and complicated in the off-season and spring when there is no need for it. You have to cut down to the 26 man prior to the season and maintain that during the year.
Besides I don't see how it is complicated stay at 26 or under, pretty simple. If a Major league team has a player whose contract runs out they must sign him in order to trade him. They are not allowed at anytime to go over their roster limit. It defeats the purpose of having a roster limit. If thats the case eliminate the roster limit as long as you have cap room you can have as many players as you want.
Every offseason we will open free agency on a designated date before the season, and the free agency period will run until the last day of the season. - Free agent bidding will last 24 hours from the most recent bid, and must be in increments minimum of $0.50, with the initial minimum bid being $1. - All contract lengths must be posted with every bid, but have no bearing on the bidding process. By league vote in 2021 the combination of years and dollars decide the winning bid for acquiring player. Example $5/2 ($10 bid) is a winning bid over $5/1 ($5 bid). - Managers will then have 24 hours to clear a roster space or the managers bid is declared invalid. A $1 cap penalty will be be declared for all teams that do not clear a roster spot within 24 hours. - All teams must have the necessary salary cap space available when placing any free agent bids.
Managers will then have 24 hours to clear a roster space or the managers bid is declared invalid. A $1 cap penalty will be be declared for all teams that do not clear a roster spot within 24 hours.
It says off season free agency, must clear a space for free agent.

It’s called a 40-man roster my friend. Major League teams only have deadlines around their roster maintenance as well. During the season, teams have a 40 man roster to use and only 25-active spots. To account for IL, suspensions, Covid, etc. They maintain their 40 man roster only a few months before the season starts and can only have 26 men on a game-day roster.
Nowhere in our rules does it state anything about 40 man roster.
It states 26 or under at all times. (underlined) that tells me it is an important fact. It also states when you win a free agent bid you must have an open space within 24 hours or you lose the bid. If you bid on 8 players on the last day of the season you have to open up 8 spots.
Ryan (Cubs): Today is the last day to re-sign your restricted free agents! All players that are left unsigned will be dropped tomorrow and eligible for free agency

Red Sox (Kris): We still have a MAX 20 prospects, correct?
Feb 26, 2024 9:15:10 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Yes. 20 prospects is the MiLB max, you either need to drop a prospect or call someone up if you are over that limit.
Feb 26, 2024 11:56:08 GMT -5
Red Sox (Kris): I don’t, but I know that some do. So, to be clear, we can draft over the 20 limit as long as we cut down before the season starts?
Feb 29, 2024 23:45:26 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Technically you should be dropping a player anytime a draft pick or trade takes you over the limit of 20. I must've missed it but Yankees needs to release one of his MiLB players, they are the only team over the limit right now

Mar 12, 2024 16:15:04 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Technically you can't bid on Yuki in free agency until he pitches an inning in the MLB. You could have drafted him in the MiLB draft, but players that haven't made their debut can't be nominated in Free Agency.

Mariners (Rook): I do believe Ronel Blanco free agent final bid of $3/3 by LAD is invalid and the player should be returned to free agency. That was LAD last transaction and it put his cap -0.25. We can’t go negative cap. What say you?

Ryan (Cubs): @mariners, correct. LAD's bid on Blanco put him $.25 over the cap so the bid is invalidated. I've messaged LAD and dropped Blanco from his roster
