I thought of that too - it might have to be where we allow them to do a roster move on days when he is pitching and then drop him without penalty or waivingnsomeone else off the roster

I think you should have both. The way I’ve heard of people doing it is that you can only have one of them onbyor rister at a time and you can only drop one for the other I.e. pick up pitcher when he is starting and the hitter any other day

I don’t think there should be an option to have one or the other - it has to be both. It’s one player, you can only have the hitter or the pitcher version on your roster at any given time. Miami is the only one that can pick him up, and that way he only uses one roster spot

That seems like a huge disadvantage to Miami. He options are either A. Only have 24 players all year B. Be Forced to make several transactions every week to add/drop Ohtani the pitcher just for his starts (plus the corresponding waiver move)

I’m coming Atit at the point that it’s a huge advantage for Miami. He is the 25th man on the roster. He either has the picture, or the hitter, and they can be dropped only for each other. There is no waivers, he wouldn’t lose either of them.He essentially gets 26 players on his roster.

Yeah, I think I see where the confusion was. Miami has the rights to both options, nobody else could on one while he owns the other. You either on them both or you don’t. As for people picking them up, they have to win a bid before people can pick them up anyways so hopefully that’s not an issue, Since he won’t ever be put on waivers

I thought I was helping you out there Miami. If we want to get technical, he was drafted as one player so shouldnt he stay one player rather than get split into two rookie contracts now?
The same can be said for hunter green and Brendan McKay. If you’re going to treat them as two separate players, then what happens if Milwaukee wants to sell the hitting half of McKay, And then he never becomes a hitter?
In my opinion, you draft one player it needs to stay one player.

Yeah he is one player, but if I only end up wanting to keep the pitching version and drop the hitting version, I don't think I should be locked in to both. I think I should get the choice to have either/both. If I trade Ohtani (which I won't), I trade Ohtani, not Ohtani (Pitcher).
Post by Ryan (Cubs) on Feb 15, 2018 21:06:07 GMT -5
It’s not a disadvantage if he is one player, one contract...But it is much different if one player/draft pick all of a sudden becomes two players with separate contracts.
Post by Ryan (Cubs) on Feb 15, 2018 21:09:18 GMT -5
Correct? You DONT have to ever play the hitting version if you don’t want to, but you shouldn’t be able to trade the hitting version as if it is a separate contract. It would just be you choosing not to take advantage of the only player capable of having elite pitching and good hitting stats count as one player, but either way there is only ONE contract shared by the hitting and pitching halves

Ohtani should be treated as 1 guy his rights are owned by Marlins. I sure hope no one try’s to use as 2 guys it would be a nightmare. (As trade rights to either hitter or pitcher) The way I look at it is Marlins technically has 26 players, but only 25 active. Need to declare which role Ohtani is hitter or pitcher on the day of play. I really don’t think this experiment will last very long. Babe Ruth is the last player to succeed who eventually became an outfielder. I heard a stat not too long ago only 6 or few players were successful in hitter and pitcher roles most were before 1900.

If you are saying that you’d want to have both in your roster at the same time, then I don’t see how you could do that without having to expose someone to waivers - which is fine with me if that’s how you want to play that, but that’s like unnecessarily forfeiting a player when you don’t have to
Marlins should be able to have 26 on their roster with 2 being the Ohtanis with only one CAP hit. However, for a scoring period they can only use the hitter or the pitcher for that week. One week they can move him in or out as the hitter Ohtani only. If one week he is going to be a 2 start pitcher then he can use him that week as the pitcher Ohtani, but the hitter Ohtani cannot be used during that scoring period.
I was planning on only having 24 and having both Ohtani's on my roster (for the combined $2-R contract). It should not be allowed to be half traded I agree, and I would never do that.

That was my whole issue. Nothing to do with who owns what or what can people choose to do. It was with the logistics of using yahoo and us being limited to 25 players on their site. My question was an IT question mainly. But Marlins just answered it, he willing to roster 24 players initially.
My other question was. Lets say it's june and ohtani is hitting .220 like i expect and marlins is in the hunt (also like i expect) and he wants that 25th roster spot. Can he just drop ohtani the hitter to yahoo waivers and keep the pitcher? Or is he forced to roster the awful ohtani hitter and still roll with essentially 24 players all year. (25 technically - but 1 player (hitter ohtani) that he has no option to ever drop).

THat's what I am saying. I should have the option to drop the hitter and add a real 25th player. Nobody could bid on him as a free agent because I own Ohtani and choose to only roster the pitcher.
Ryan (Cubs): Today is the last day to re-sign your restricted free agents! All players that are left unsigned will be dropped tomorrow and eligible for free agency

Red Sox (Kris): We still have a MAX 20 prospects, correct?
Feb 26, 2024 9:15:10 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Yes. 20 prospects is the MiLB max, you either need to drop a prospect or call someone up if you are over that limit.
Feb 26, 2024 11:56:08 GMT -5
Red Sox (Kris): I don’t, but I know that some do. So, to be clear, we can draft over the 20 limit as long as we cut down before the season starts?
Feb 29, 2024 23:45:26 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Technically you should be dropping a player anytime a draft pick or trade takes you over the limit of 20. I must've missed it but Yankees needs to release one of his MiLB players, they are the only team over the limit right now

Rockies (Jose): Is Yuki Matsui rostered?
Mar 12, 2024 16:15:04 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Technically you can't bid on Yuki in free agency until he pitches an inning in the MLB. You could have drafted him in the MiLB draft, but players that haven't made their debut can't be nominated in Free Agency.

Mariners (Rook): I do believe Ronel Blanco free agent final bid of $3/3 by LAD is invalid and the player should be returned to free agency. That was LAD last transaction and it put his cap -0.25. We can’t go negative cap. What say you?

Ryan (Cubs): @mariners, correct. LAD's bid on Blanco put him $.25 over the cap so the bid is invalidated. I've messaged LAD and dropped Blanco from his roster
