I think it would be a good idea to remind everyone that bidding on a free agent prior to opening day isn't about rookie status or not. In the past, and anyone can correct me, it was based on whether or not the player was on the opening day roster. It's pretty obvious on 95% (made up % there!) are indisputable, but there are occasions where the player being bid on is not on a 26-man roster and you'll just have to wait.
If I recall correctly, the most memorable player was Jose Castillo (dang, he was so sought after prior to the injuries). Only issue was whether or not he was going to make the opening day roster. I believe the decision was to wait to rostering and then open to bid on him.
I recommend using Fangraphs Roster Resources to determine eligibility of players expected to make opening day roster. They are generally pretty good with their team construction. The link below is the Texas Rangers predicted roster:
A player in question in free agency is Demarcus Evans. He is not currently projected to be on the Opening Day roster, so I would say it would be best to make everyone wait on him until opening day or when final roster comes out.
This is just a suggestion as I'm in no way a member of the admin staff!
I think it would be a good idea on "tweener" players that if Roster Resources projects the player on opening day roster, then bid away. If he isn't projected, then wait. If posting on a tweener type, just include the Fangraphs Roster Resource team page in a link to avoid confusion.
That's all I have!

I believe he still qualifies as a prospect and can’t technically be bid on until he’s officially on the Opening Day roster. I could be wrong. He’s a guy I was waiting to bid on lol

I do think it might be a good idea to amend the league rules to make this clearer and maybe include the blurb about roster resources. I think that simple step would clear things up.

It definitely should have been brought up for Oliva and Jefferies. Neither guy is projected to make the opening day roster and should not have been bid on. I'm not an Admin in the league but if I were I would have stepped in (and also been watching the folders very closely).
Jefferies and Oliva should return to the free agent pool and we all should have to wait til opening day or when they are rostered during season. That's the resolution I would simply do if I were an Admin.

As long as a player has any MLB experience, they are able to be bid on at any time. If a prospect has zero MLB experience he cannot be bid on until opening day.
Example Wander Franco (yes he's owned, let's pretend he's not): You couldn't bid on Wander Franco until opening day because he hasn't played in an MLB game. Example Ke'Bryan Hayes (again, pretend unowned): He could be bid on today since he has MLB experience (regardless of prospect status or not).
Unrelated side note: If we were drafting, you could still draft Ke'Bryan Hays as he has prospect status.

Just to clarify Castillo was active in 2018. Jefferies, Olivia, Evans, and Kremer were all on MLB rosters last season. Expected eligibility isn’t factual to active roster. Often several publications have had different announcements of players being called up. If the player is active they are available to be bid on unless they are owned. Several times owners get excited and bid on a player on minor league roster.

Castillo incident came up years ago and resolution was had to wait til opening day to see if he made roster.
I think a good strategy would be to find players now that debuted in 2020 and will spend a majority of the year in minors. Add them to NA spots on roster - especially Marlins/Cardinals who used a lot of kids because of Covid.

Yeah I thought once they have made appearance and after the draft, they were fair game. If they have not made an appearance, they cannot be bid on until they are officially on a roster on Opening Day. But I could be wrong

Steve I am a guy actually, lol....but yes I recall that Castillo incident a few years back...it was explained then that all players under the 150ab/50ip criteria fell into the prospect category and could only be obtained via draft in preseason otherwise had to wait until after opening day...lost the player...then the next season I believe Andres Munoz was signed in preseason with only 32 ip or so....and it was ok....since then it's been as admin described once a player has MLB experience they can be claimed via FA...

As for your suggestion, does it really matter??? Seems like an added step to make the system/process more complicated...I think how it is now is simple and indisputable...

Red Sox (Kris): We still have a MAX 20 prospects, correct?
Feb 26, 2024 9:15:10 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Yes. 20 prospects is the MiLB max, you either need to drop a prospect or call someone up if you are over that limit.
Feb 26, 2024 11:56:08 GMT -5
Red Sox (Kris): I don’t, but I know that some do. So, to be clear, we can draft over the 20 limit as long as we cut down before the season starts?
Feb 29, 2024 23:45:26 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Technically you should be dropping a player anytime a draft pick or trade takes you over the limit of 20. I must've missed it but Yankees needs to release one of his MiLB players, they are the only team over the limit right now

Rockies (Jose): Is Yuki Matsui rostered?
Mar 12, 2024 16:15:04 GMT -5
Ryan (Cubs): Technically you can't bid on Yuki in free agency until he pitches an inning in the MLB. You could have drafted him in the MiLB draft, but players that haven't made their debut can't be nominated in Free Agency.

Mariners (Rook): I do believe Ronel Blanco free agent final bid of $3/3 by LAD is invalid and the player should be returned to free agency. That was LAD last transaction and it put his cap -0.25. We can’t go negative cap. What say you?

Ryan (Cubs): @mariners, correct. LAD's bid on Blanco put him $.25 over the cap so the bid is invalidated. I've messaged LAD and dropped Blanco from his roster
